A gay couple, together for 17 years, decided to head down to their local courthouse in Morehead County, Kentucky yesterday afternoon in the hopes of receiving a marriage license.
Unfortunately. the courthouse clerks seem to be stuck in a time loop that ends just before June 26, 2015, because they refused to issue these men their legal right.
The video, taken by a female friend of the couple, shows the two men standing patiently while waiting for a clerk to help them. Several other people are assisted before them while the couple remains silent, until one of the clerks, not in view, yells, “Don’t you have anything better to do?”
After being berated by other employees (including one unseen male who sounds like Todd Chrisley), and filmed on a phone by a guy in a “SWERVE” t-shirt (like, why?) a clerk informs the men that they are welcome to seek help from any of the neighboring counties… just not their own.
The most painful part comes at the end of the video, when the men explain to one clerk that both a letter from the Kentucky governor and a printed version of the Supreme Court ruling say that these people are required by law to issue them a license.
“I know what it says,” the woman replies, without even looking at the paper, “and it’s our right as Christians to not help you.”
This video is an important testament to how much intolerance remains, even when we are officially considered legal.
