Every once in awhile, both parties can come together to laugh at something or someone that is so ridiculous. The moment is rare, but it is truly glorious to witness when it does happen, sort of like a beautiful political solar eclipse. This episode of bipartisan laughter is brought to you by Kansas state senator Mitch Holmes, who believes that women testifying before his committee should be subjected to a vague dress code he is imposing.
I’m not sure how Mitch Holmes intends to define what is and what is not a “distraction,” but he certainly thinks it is enough of a problem that something must be done, even if it makes him the ridicule of both parties.
As expected, the rules have gone over like a loud fart in church, and members of both political parties have criticized Mitch Holmes for this blatantly sexist move. Dressing in a professional and appropriate manner is already a requirement in government offices, but leave it to Mitch Holmes to tell the ladies how to dress and act when they’re around men.
Kansas is already facing a number of problems like their budget crisis, thanks to Governor Brownback and the GOP-controlled state government. Perhaps Mitch Holmes should concentrate on the things that really matter, not women’s necklines or skirt heights. This is a public building after all, not a religious school – and this isn’t the 19th century.
